Margarita WARS

July 25, 2016, 6:00pm - July 25, 2016, 10:00pm

Starting this Monday, July 25th, The Arizona Taco Festival (aka us), is launching a new lead-up series of events called Margarita Wars. We’re helping to produce the ultimate head-to-head margarita showdown, hosted at our favorite fancy cocktail bar — Counter Intuitive — located in Old Town Scottsdale. Each month, two top mixologists from other bars around town will head to CI and battle for the best margarita in this head-to-head. Guests will get to sample their entries and our celebrity judges will decide who the winning bar is at each battle. “The timing couldn’t be more perfect for us at CI, as we are now featuring our Agua Caliente Racetrack theme. We are so excited to be part of the AZ Taco Fest,” says CI partner and local celeb-u-tender, Jason Asher. Truth be told, it was Asher who inspired this competition. In last year’s Margarita Expo, Asher and his Counter Intuitive team served over 1,400 impossible perfect cocktails to tent attendees. Then the lightbulb went off–let’s turn Saturday’s Tequila Expo into a Margarita Expo on Sunday with multiple bartenders! So back to the battles. Each contestant will participate in the Taco Festival’s new Margarita Expo Tent on Sunday, October 16th. Here, attendees will get to vote for People’s Choice. Scores from both the judges and public will determine a winner, who will be sent to The Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans next year! Here’s the initial lineup (more are signing up as you read this): JULY 25: Clever Koi vs Modern Margarita AUG 8: Crudo vs Jade Bar at Sanctuary AUG 22: OBON Sushi Bar Ramen vs Okra SEP 5: Casino Del Sol PY Steakhouse vs Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour SEP 19: The Ostrich vs Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails Battles are from 6-8pm. Counter Intuitive is located at 7133 E. Stetson, next door to Cowboy Ciao.

2016 Salt River IAFF Local 2260 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

September 11, 2016, 7:00am - September 11, 2016, 6:00pm

The 2016 Salt River IAFF Local 2260 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on 9-11-2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter, police officer, or EMS provider by climbing stairs equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 10 EMS providers are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. Opening ceremonies will include posting of colors, a tribute video, the national anthem, and guest speakers. Climbers will make their way through a designated route of stairs through Salt River Fields stadium to climb a total of 110 stories. Climbers can climb as few or as many stairs as they choose. Each climber will be issued and symbolically carry a small photo of one of the first responders that were killed on 9/11/2001 at the World Trade Center Towers throughout their climb. The event is capped at 343 climbers, but family, children, and friends are welcome to come support their climbers for free. Home Depot will have a kids building workshop on site, and multiple Arizona Fire Departments and sponsors will have booths. Your $30 climber registration fee includes a commemorative T-Shirt, and entrance into the event. Non-Climbers are free. The Stair Climb benefits the FDNY CSU and the programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of our nation’s fallen firefighters, including Firefighters from Arizona and surrounding states. The FDNY Counseling Service Unit (CSU) staff provide mental health evaluations, direct treatment, and appropriate referrals for all employees, Fire, EMS, and other civilians nation-wide. Raffles will be held and the proceeds will benefit the East Valley Firefighters Charities.
